Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2, “Amabile”

The Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 2, “Amabile Sonata” is the composer’s tribute to the genius of Johannes Brahms. While the essence of his music pervades the whole work, this sonata shows yet the composer’s own perceptions on the master’s music. Divided in two sections, it mirrors the first movement of Brahms’s G Major Violin Sonata in character and textures. The first section (Allegro ma non troppo) includes reference to sixteenth-century polyphony of which Brahms was so fond. Rhythmic tension is developed by the instability of devices that derive from hemiolas. There is also a very tight tonal architecture in the piece to provide a clear direction in the music.  After the intense climax of the piece, the second section (Poco tranquillo – lento) leads towards the conclusion of the piece, a peaceful ending to the composer’s reverie of the German master.
